Fragment Set

Date

Spring 2026

The Fragment Set is a coat rack and desk shelving unit that are both flat pack, using no hardware or glue for assembly. The set focuses on how dynamic and unique forms can be used to create functional objects and structures. Since the set needed to be easy to assemble without hardware, both products use sliding duplicate back pieces to create a strong structure while prioritizing aesthetics. The coat rack uses a central tower to hold coats and has three shelves for shoes. The top two shelves are floating, which is a unique feature in flat pack furniture. The desk shelves mimic the floating elements of the coat rack, but approach the structure in a different way because of the scale of the object. Both pieces are inspired by angular forms and movement, and the use of small pieces to create a larger product is both a manufacturing and aesthetic decision. The CNC router that was used to manufacture these pieces had a four foot dimension limit, so the coat rack could not achieve its height with just one piece. These limitations inspired the concept for the project, showcasing what can happen when limitations are used as a positive, not a negative. This project was created in Design for Production in Spring 2026 and manufactured with bamboo plywood.
